The College

Brief History of the College

Dalmia College, Rajgangpur was established in the year 1970 at Jharbera around a sylvan background and verdure of forest and hills. The college was inaugurated by Late R. N. Singhdeo, the then Chief Minister of Odisha on August, 19, 1970. The college owes its origin to the efforts and initiatives of Sri S. Sundar Rajan, I.A.S., the then Collector of Sundargarh. The college building is situated approximately 12 k.m. away from Rajgangpur town on the No. 10 State Highway. It provides teaching facilities up to degree stage in Arts, Science and Commerce with Honours in all major subjects.

At its inception the College had only a strength of 64 students in two faculties, Arts and Commerce. But there has been rapid and steady improvement of both the facultiies. The Science faculty opened during the academic session 1980-81.

The present strength has gone up to 1300. Facilities for Honours teaching have been provided in English, Odia, Hindi, Political Science, History, Economics, Philosophy, Commerce, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Mathematics and Zoology. Education Being located in an area predominently inhabited by tribal and backward classes, the College provides a unique opportunity to them for higher education.

The present massive and majestic building donated by Messers Dalmia, Orissa Cement Limited, Rajgangpur was inaugurated on 30th August 1981 by Sri Janaki Ballav Pattnaik the then Chief Minister of Odisha, with Sri Gangadhar Mohapatra the then Minister, Education and Sri Kishore Chandra Patel, the then Minister, Industries as guests of honour.

During the 52 years of its existence the college has provided higher education to the poor and needy students of the locality. Many students having completed their education in this college have been established in different fields of the society. The college itself has also grown in different aspects. It has now better infrastructure, a gymnassium, a sports complex, two ladies hostels, one boy's hostel, housing for the staff, education in computer science, computerzation of the Office and library etc. Now the college is short listed for being a college with potential for excellence and for Autonomous stutus. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has already granted this college the NAAC status.
