 DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

  1. DEPARTMENTAL  AT  A  GLANCE

The Department of Zoology is dedicated to inspiring and laying the foundation for cutting-edge discoveries and inventions in the new area of biology. We focus on nurturing, budding young students while emphasizing local biodiversity, ethical research practices, and cultural sensitivity. Through comprehensive education, we aim to empower these students to become environmental stewards, contributing to wildlife conservation and sustainable management, and driving innovation in the evolving field of biology. The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1986-87 with Zoology as a pass paper and in the year 2007 Honours subject was established. The Department of Zoology has one well equipped laboratory with different types of teaching aids such as models, specimens, charts, permanent slides, microscopes and various other equipments. The Department caters to students coming from rural, underprivileged, and Schedule tribe-dominated regions of Sundargarh, as well as other districts of Odisha, empowering them to become valuable contributors to society. With a strong emphasis on social responsibility, the Department equips students to bridge the gap between science and everyday life, fostering a sense of responsibility as citizens who positively impact society.

Vision:

  • Fostering a scientific temperament for the benefit of students and society.
  • Global improvement of students through moral and scientific educational practices.
  • The Department promote the discovery and broad knowledge about the biology of animals,

evolution and their environments.

Mission: Inquire, Innovate, and Inspire.

Values:

  • Affordable education in biological sciences for all.
  • Cultivating research aptitude from the graduate level.
  • Promoting animal welfare and biodiversity conservation.

Objectives:

  • Impart quality education in Zoology to rural students in Orissa with minimal fees.
  • Encourage self-employment opportunities in applied branches of Zoology.
  • Emphasize value-based education and entrepreneurial skills.
  • Instill a love for nature and resource conservation.
  • Conduct field studies and projects of local and global interest.

History:

The department was established in the year 1986-87, offering Zoology as a Pass Subject

in the Bachelor of Science degree during which Mrs. Bilasini Pradhan served as the Head of the

Department (HOD) until July 1999. Recognizing the subject's significance and the relentless

Efforts, then HOD, Mr. A. N. Jena and the Principal of Dalmia college Rajgangpur, Dr. P. K. Mohanty

granted permission of the university to introduce the Zoology Honours course in 2007. Initially, in

the first batch, three students were admitted to the Honours course. However, the dedicated

efforts of HOD and all staff members, the student enrollment in the Department has grown

substantially, filling all available seats in current scenario.

Innovative practices of the department:

I.Induction of Meetings:

At the beginning of each academic session, the Department warmly welcomes the new first-year

students, aiming to instill in them a sense of responsibility and obligation. During the welcome

ceremony, the students receive a concise overview of both the college and the Department of

Zoology. They are acquainted with the academic calendar, examination system, hostel amenities,

and the rules and regulations governing the Department and College. Furthermore, they are

introduced to the departmental facilities, laboratory equipment, and specimens essential for their

practical sessions, departmental seminars, and study tours.

II. Counseling Assistance:

Faculty and guest speakers provide regular counseling to students, focusing on their physical,

emotional, and mental well-being, as well as career development with support from parents.

III. Farewell Ceremony

A farewell program is organized each year for the departing students. During this event, the

scope of pursuing a B.Sc degree with a special focus on Zoology is discussed. The departing

students are inspired with encouraging words and valuable life lessons to pave the way for a

successful career. As a parting gesture, they are provided with previous year question

papers from various national and state-level entrance examinations, equipping them to face

upcoming examinations. The Department leaves an indelible mark on the students, carrying with
